Hey baby, want to research?

Everyday reference
I’m just coming off a weekend of wall to wall librarianship. I was fortunate to spend all day Thursday and Friday at the PLA conference. Followed by a raucous Friday night reminding the gentle citizens of Cambridge, MA that information needs are all around us, if we’d only look. I got a bit of a breather on Saturday and Sunday before today’s NELINET workshop. It was great after all that theorizing (although not as much as other conferences, public librarians are so practical, god love ‘em) to learn something practical and immediately applicable.

I intend to write more about all these events, but a friend passed on a piece from Thurday’s Globe, To compete, libraries take page from retail by Catherine Elton. She quotes Karen Hyman, a conference attendee:

Libraries have to keep working to be relevant. Are we copying Barnes and Noble and grocery stores? Yeah. Retail is a specialty and a profession, and it’s not outs, but we can learn from people in retail.

Amen to that.
